Working on the terminology on migration

Abstract

Integration is a complex process. For our learning activities we need to set from the very begining the common ground in terms of language and content. For that reason, this entry- level lesson scenario will start from the clarification of the terminology we use about migration, refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people, minorities, assimilation, multiculturalism, marginalization, segregation etc.

Preparation time

Preparation time is estimated to 4-6 hours, which consist of studying the terminology of the lesson and preparing the powerpoint.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this unit, participants will be able to:

  • Use the terminology properly,
  • Know about the different forms of migration,
  • Understand better the international regulations for people seeking protection.

Activity description

Every participant received a folder with a QR code. Every QR code describe one terminology. The trainer is opening the session by asking the participants to scan the codes and try to guess which term belongs to which explanation. The trainer gives 2-3 minutes to the participants to explore the terminologies. Afterwards, the trainer shares the PowerPoint and goes through all the explanations of the terms. It is necessary to explore the terms together with the participants and keep the discussion open for further questions and suggestions.
